To commemorate two years since the phenomenon that was Pokémon GO’s initial launch, Niantic and The Pokémon Company have shared a new celebratory piece of artwork that heavily hints towards Gen 4 inclusion in the game.

The image was posted last night as part of a tweet put out to fans to share their favorite memories from the past two years of the mobile title’s existence. In the image, Pokémon from the first three generations can be seen, including the Alolan form of Gen 1 Pokémon that were added to Pokémon GO as special promotions over the Summer. What is most interesting, however, is that Gen 4 starters Chimchar, Turtwig, and Piplup are featured in the artwork as well.
Inclusion of the next generation has been entirely expected up to this point, fans simply did not know when to expect them. If the image is any indication, these starter Pokémon should be the first to roll out somewhat soon, followed by an update with even more monsters over time. In fact, Pokémon GO Fest 2018 is set to kick off this tomorrow and run for this weekend, so it would not be surprising if more news or even an update dropped then.
