Make new friends, attend classes and learn spells
Hogwarts Mystery is a mobile game coming to both iOS and Android. It looks to provide its own, unique Hogwarts experience; a story of one’s choosing, outside the well-known Harry Potter narrative.
Developer Jam City released a new video today providing further details on its upcoming Harry Potter title. The video gives significantly more details than the reveal trailer released in January, and gives us a comprehensive look at the game’s activities.
As a narrative built within the same universe, Hogwarts Mystery will feature many familiar faces. Professors Snape, McGonagall and Flitwick; as well as Albus Dumbledore; can all be seen. What won’t be seen, however, is Harry Potter and his friends, as it is set well before the events of the book series.
The Hogwarts experience itself, however, lives on outside the famous wizard. Players will have to do almost everything Potter once did—including get into duels and learning new spells. The adventure begins with a choosing of one’s House (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw) and making one’s path from there.
Though there are no explicit details, what we see in the trailer looks to be different from most other Harry Potter games. In learning spells, for example, there would seem to be both a time limit and a ranking system involved. Gems of two varieties seem to play a role as micro-transactions—perhaps in regard to the aforementioned systems.
As a mobile game, it is hard to say how large it might be. But there are several locations seen (perhaps across a long time period), as well as several spells and creatures. And it is almost a given that some of the backstory of Harry Potter will appear.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is expected to arrive on iOS and Android later this spring. In the meantime, one can pre-register with the game via Google Play. This will allow one to get started playing as soon as the game releases.
