Egress presents a Souls-like take on the PUBG format
If you are looking for a new game to watch out for in 2018, Egress is certainly an option. It has a lot of character and style, and it presents the merging of two very interesting formats.
Egress claims to mix together the two popular, genre-defining games of Dark Souls and Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds. The ‘Souls-like’ comes through in the combat and with how it controls. The PUBG feel manifests in its arena-like, free-for-all, survival gameplay.
Imitation is perhaps the sincerest form of flattery, but the game does look to be more than a simple imitation.
For one, the soundtrack has a distinct, retrowave/techno atmosphere to it. It complements well the neo-Victorian setting, which features plenty of gorgeous, neon lights in its brooding darkness. In the trailer, there is also something of a space maelstrom (or something), which we are guessing is related to the game’s supposed tie-in to Lovecraftian mythology.
Even outside Dark Souls and PUBG elements, Egress presents an environment that we are anxious to see more of.
The creator of Egress is indie developer Fazan Games. One is unlikely to have heard of their other, small projects before, but Egress has been getting some attention. With PUBG fever exploding across the internet, it makes sense. But even as mere casual fans of PUBG, we are willing to give this game a chance.
Egress is set to release for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Though the Steam page lists its release date for sometime in 2018, its Indie Database page gives a general “to be determined.” Whenever it releases, this may be a good game to watch out through its development.
