‘Game of Thrones’ Creators to Make New ‘Star Wars’ Series

New series to take place outside Skywalker saga

With Game of Thrones wrapping up soon, its team members will be moving on to other jobs. In the case of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, that may mean moving to another galaxy entirely.

It was announced by Lucasfilm today that the creators of the Game of Thrones HBO series will soon be making new Star Wars movies. More than a single title, it is said to be an entirely new series. What this means exactly, we cannot say yet, but we know for sure that these movies will be separate from both the Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson.

Which means we might have maybe a few more Star Wars movies to look forward to.

With the Game of Thrones series, Benioff and Weiss have taken a big book series and made it into a popular franchise. The series even explores new territory beyond the books, presenting an engaging narrative beyond even what George R.R. Martin has written.

No doubt Lucasfilm is hoping for a similar result with this new Star Wars series. In a prepared statement, this is what Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, had to say:

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today… Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

It is true that Star Wars has a lot of history to work with. As Rian Johnson, J.J. Abrams and other directors are breaking new ground for a post-Skywalker universe, Benioff and Weiss could find new material in a time before.

Whatever happens, there will be some very big developments to come.
