Darkest Dungeon Unearths Lovecraftian ‘Colour Out of Space’ DLC

The dungeon still holds more horrors

The dungeon isn’t finished with us yet, as new horrors rise from the depths. Or perhaps fall from space, in this instance. Darkest Dungeon is getting new DLC, inspired by one of H.P. Lovecraft’s lesser-known stories.

Developer Red Hook recently announced The Color of Madness as the third DLC for Darkest Dungeon. The DLC includes a new environment, new enemies and quests, as well as “powerful new trinkets” to assist adventurers in their trials.

The premise of The Color of Madness can be read from the following:

Some hateful shard of alien origin has streaked through the night sky, crashing into the old Miller’s farm on the outskirts of the Hamlet!  Those unfortunate enough to witness the Comet’s arrival have been blinded by what they can only describe as a shifting, ephemeral hue of damnably abrasive intensity.  There has been no word from the farm in a fortnight, save for the unearthly groaning that echoes from the ruin of the mill…

The new DLC is clearly inspired by one of H.P. Lovecraft’s short stories, The Colour Out of Space. Lovecraft’s short story, too, concerns the landing of a meteorite on a small farm in a village hamlet. Though the initial impact harms no one, the space rock brings it with an unearthly color, which begins to destroy crops and infect the populace. Given the description of an “ephemeral hue of damnably abrasive intensity” and the new enemy faction of “the husks of the Miller and his farmhands”, we are likely to run into this Color Out of Space.

No specific release date has been confirmed yet, but The Color of Madness is planned for a 2018 spring release.

In addition to the announcement of new DLC, Red Hook had a word or two about Darkest Dungeon’s console ports. The Shieldbreaker is to be released for PS4 and PS Vita tomorrow, but the DLC is still in the works for the iPad. Most notably, however, it has been confirmed that the Switch release will include both the Crimson Court and Shieldbreaker DLCs upon release.

There is still no word on a Switch release date, but Red Hook is hoping for “sometime early in the new year if all goes well.”
