Last week’s Nintendo Direct might be transitioning into ‘old news’ now, but with plenty to cover each Direct cycle, there’s often a few games that get left by the wayside. One game that might warrant a little more attention is the remake of Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.
Originally announced at E3 2017, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions is not only a mouthful of a title, but a remake of the GBA classic. The original pixel art has been updated and, alongside the original story of Mario and Luigi, a new story has been added, in the form of the ‘plus’ that is Bowser’s Minions.
Bowser’s Minions is a new story centered on the character Captain Goomba, whose takes on the task of rescuing Lord Bowser when he is captured by the Beanish genius Fawful. The new story introduces a gameplay format as well, which is focused on directing a squad of minions in battle, using ‘Captain Points’ to influence the battle in one’s favor. The minions themselves should be recognizable, as they include familiar Mario enemies like Koopa Troopas, Shy Guys, Boos and Lakitus, to name a few.
Bowser’s Minions additionally has a number of captains one can play as, with the option to switch out Captain Goomba with other characters like Captain Boo or Captain Shy Guy. Each character has their own Captain abilities and encourages a different playstyle.
Though a portion of this information might have been covered already with the E3 announcement, the Nintendo Direct told us of a few new things as well. For one, Amiibo functionality was confirmed for the game. Additionally, two new Amiibo are planned for release with the game; a Goomba and a Koopa Troopa. These Amiibo fill out a newly-introduced stamp book, which unlocks in-game rewards as the player fills it out.
In closing, the Nintendo Direct also confirmed a release date for the upcoming remake. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS on October 6 of this year.
