Dragon Ball FighterZ: Android 21 and the Launch of the Closed Beta

Dragon Ball FighterZ isn’t all returning characters and familiar ‘what-if’ scenarios. In a recent issue of a Japanese magazine, it was revealed that series artist Akira Toriyama has designed an original character exclusive to the upcoming videogame.

Android 21 is an all-new female character who has some unknown ties to the Android ‘family’ of characters, seemingly acting as an ally to the revived Android 16, who is said to be a villain in Dragon Ball FighterZ. She was revealed by Bandai Namco in the latest issue of V-Jump, though there isn’t too much that has been said about her yet. Aside from her connection to Android 16, we know that she’s supposed to have a genius-level intellect comparable to that of Dr. Gero.

But Android 21 isn’t the only character to be revealed for the fighting game recently. Also revealed in the V-Jump issue were Yamcha and Tien Shinhan, two of the series’ Earthling characters and recurrent protagonists. Naturally, Chiaotzu is Tien’s support character.

More characters have yet to be revealed for Dragon Ball FighterZ, but today marked the start of the game’s closed beta on PS4 and Xbox One. Those who were selected to participate from a pool last month should have received a download code via email this morning, allowing them to download the beta. The beta itself is unusual in that it only runs during certain time periods:

For those who weren’t selected, it might be a while before one gets to experience any real gameplay. Though we have no news yet on a definite release date, Dragon Ball FighterZ is supposed to be released sometime in early 2018.
