A classic system isn’t the only thing to be revived by Nintendo’s upcoming release of the SNES Classic; it’s also bringing back a classic videogame magazine.
Popular ‘90s magazine Super Play will be returning with the SNES Classic launch for one final issue. Being released as a companion to next month’s issue of Retro Gamer (Issue 172), the Super Play one-off will contain new reviews of the 20 SNES games packaged with the SNES Classic, as well as a cover story about the new Star Fox 2.
Super Play’s 48th issue will feature 52 pages of original content, mostly focused on the new SNES Classic release. A number of the original staff have even returned to work on the upcoming issue, including Jason Brookes, Jonathan Davies, Tony Mott and Zy Nicholson. Other roles are being filled out by the team of Retro Gamer and a group of Nintendo experts from several different gaming news organizations.
Fans of Super Play will also be pleased that the cover features artwork by Wil Overton, the artist responsible for each cover of Super Play’s 47-issue run. And true to Super Play form, there are a number of contests contained within Issue 48’s pages, including the opportunity to win original Wil Overton artwork, hand-painted and signed.
The SNES Classic has a release date of September 29 and the new Super Play issue is likely to release in early September, alongside the new Retro Gamer issue.
