Kids of the 90’s rejoice! SEGA is bringing classic split-screen multiplayer back to Sonic Mania in the form of a new Competition Mode.
Unveiled in a new gameplay trailer, the mode will allow players to select from the three playable characters — Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles — and compete in head-to-head races through various zones to determine a winner. Categories used for scoring include clear time, overall score, number of items used, number of rings held upon completion, and number of rings gained throughout.
In addition, a couple of customization options will be available to users, such as an item switch as well as adjusting the race count to fit desired length. At this time, it is unknown if all zones of the game — or Special Stages — will be playable in Competition Mode.
Sonic Mania is set to launch next Monday, August 15 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. A few days ago, we reported on the first gameplay footage of the title’s Special Stages, as well as the return of Blue Spheres as a bonus area and the inclusion of a Time Attack mode.
